Dell UP3017Q: 120Hz 30-inch 4K OLED Monitor

Dell UP3017Q

The Dell UP3017Q marks a new era in high refresh monitors as it is the first 120Hz 4K monitor in the world. It is not surprising that it received much praise when it was revealed at CES 2016. Many were skeptical of this spec and while it difficult to really believe that we’ve reached this point so early in the year, Dell has confirmed that the monitor is indeed capable of 120Hz at 4K. To achieve this Dell is likely using DisplayPort 1.3 or DisplayPort over USB-C.

One thing we always stress when looking for a monitor is calculating its pixel density. This monitor with its 4k resolution and 30-inch size means that it has 147 pixels per inch! This easily makes it the most pixel dense high refresh monitor currently out there.

The UP3017Q’s OLED panel enables the monitor to display 1.07 billion colors. It can achieve 97.8 percent of the DCI-P3 color space which means it can display cinema quality colors.

The monitor has a 400,000:1 static contrast ratio which when compared to the 1000:1 static contrast ratio that most IPS panels flaunt means it is in a whole other league. It also has a response time of 0.1ms meaning it is even faster than TN panels which are typically recommended for their quick response time.

There is no word on whether the monitor will have adaptive sync included.

Dell has built features into the monitor that are meant to protect the OLED monitor from its two shortcomings. Dell has implemented a pixel-shifting feature to prevent image burn-in which occurs when a static image has been displayed for a long time. The other flaw being addressed is the shorter life span that OLED panels have because of the organic layer that gradually decays as time goes by. To slow this, Dell uses a presence detector that will know when you’re in front of the monitor and will have the display turned on or off accordingly.

The Dell UP3017Q will be going on sale on March 31st for an astounding $4,999. When competitors begin producing similar OLED monitors we expect the price to go down significantly. We’ll keep an eye on it and see how it fares against the top gaming monitors.
