BenQ XL2430T: 144Hz 24-inch 1080p Gaming Monitor

The BenQ XL2430T is one of the top gaming monitors currently out there. The 24-inch 144Hz monitor has a 1080p resolution with a TN panel. This BenQ monitor carries the typical specs that a mid range monitor has: response time of 1ms, 170 horizontal and 160 vertical viewing angle, 350 cd/m2 luminosity, and 1000:1 contrast. Noticeably lacking is its failure to include NVIDIA G-Sync or AMD FreeSync technology.

We should note that this monitor (and others with a TN panel) has a low response time. As a result, however, it also has the disadvantage of poor viewing angles and we quickly noticed fading of the colors when not viewed from straight ahead. This should not be a concern for competitive gamers, but something to keep in mind if intending to create a multi-monitor setup. In any event, at this resolution and size the monitor has a solid pixel density.

Features

BenQ has few tricks up their sleeves with their line of gaming monitors. Among those that are included in the XL2430T is an external “S Switch” controller which allows a person to swiftly change custom profiles. This is great in scenarios where you’d have setup a profile for each game and would help get the best viewing experience possible every time. Also included is the option of turning on “Low Blue Light”, which limits the amount of blue light emitted from the screen, removing strain on the eyes and enabling longer gaming sessions.

The on-screen display (OSD) is responsive as with all BenQ monitors and incredibly practical. One of the most important settings that users can turn on is motion blur reduction. You’ll see a very large hit in brightness when using an HDMI port, but much less when using DVI or DisplayPort. We should note that a reduction in brightness when a motion blur reduction feature is turned on is an issue present in all gaming monitors and unavoidable. This BenQ monitor allows you to fine-tune the intensity and we noticed that at a high enough level some artifacting did occur, but this was easily remedied by decreasing the amount.

There are also some other functions that you can configure in the OSD such as Black eQualizer which helps improve the contrast, allowing for more visibility in dark areas of the screen. Some CS:GO players even complain that this is an unfair advantage. Then there’s Color Vibrance which as implied makes the colors more vivid and Instant Mode, BenQ’s terminology for overdrive, which improves the response time of the screen. We didn’t notice any inverse ghosting turning it on.

The whole experience of going through the OSD settings is made easy with nicely designed and very responsive buttons located on the ride side of the monitor. Sorting through the menu is no longer a chore with the additional external “S Switch” controller. Once you have setup your profiles you no longer have to resort to reaching for the monitor buttons.

Design

BenQ XL2430T stand
The aluminum stand is very sturdy and perfectly adjustable, allowing you to change the height, swivel, tilt and pivot, so you should have no problem putting together a multi-monitor setup. BenQ has thoughtfully included markings for you to quickly and precisely change between positions. The monitor has a cable management hole and an integrated handle for easy carrying, this is especially useful for gamers that often go on LAN parties.

A special feature that this unique to this monitor, but increasingly common is the fact that it has a hook for headphones. The hook can be pulled out from the side of the monitor when in use so it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb when not in use. It has a weight capacity of 400 grams so it should be fine for even the beefiest headphones out there.

Connectivity

BenQ XL2430T connections
The BenQ XL2430T has some of the most input options we have seen in a gaming monitor as it has VGA, dual link DVI, two HDMI 1.4 ports and DisplayPort 1.2. Then we also have two 3.5 mm jacks to connect a microphone and your headphone as well as two USB 3.0 ports.

As always we recommend you use the DisplayPort because of its superior bandwidth ability and picture quality. The cable needed for this is not included and needs to be bought separately.
